ANDANÇAS

Festival Internacional de Danças populares (International Festival of Folk Dances) is an annually held music festival in Castelo de Vide, Portugal. ANDANÇAS features world, folk, fusion and traditional music, and has grown from less than a couple hundred of people in 1995 to recently hosting over 20,000 audience members. The festival is powered by biodiesel generators – the biodiesel is provided by Prio energy -which supplies all of the festival’s energy requirements, including all of the artists, traders and concessions. The festival has carried out a planning exercise to try and ensure generators are not over-specified, and are consistent with power demands.

ANDANÇAS has tasked energy management to a specially created eco team who have started to monitor energy consumption as well as cost across the festival. Having recently switched location, this previous festival was the first year in which energy monitoring was conducted, and measurements were taken each day and recorded using Microsoft Excel. LEDs are used for the artistic and stage lighting, with other festival lighting using low-energy bulbs. Other energy saving actions include switching-off empty freezers, rationalising use of air conditioning in the kitchen areas, and providing a specific space for acoustic performances.

Thanks to ANDANÇAS for providing the information contained within this case study.

Highlights

Lighting

All lighting used on site was either LED or low-energy consumption.

Monitoring/Generators

Showing that monitoring energy does not necessarily need to be a complicated undertaking, ANDANÇAS have tasked a special ‘eco team’ among their staff to take daily measurements on energy consumption from each generator on-site and record these in an Excel spreadsheet.

Biodiesel

ANDANÇAS uses only biodiesel generators.
