Club Bahnhof Ehrenfeld, Cologne, DE

Based in the district of Ehrenfeld in Cologne, Germany, Club Bahnhof Ehrenfeld hosts a wide range of cultural events such as concerts, parties, exhibitions and poetry slams. It considers itself to be a venue for urban subcultures, hosting around 200 events from a variety of art forms. Club Bahnhof Ehrenfeld plays mainly rock and world music and frequently showcases live performances. It is also part of the pilot project Green Club Index.

Since 2011, Club Bahnhof Ehrenfeld has conducted a variety of energy saving actions in partnership with the Green Club Index. It has switched its electricity provider to the independent green electricity provider Naturstrom. Naturstrom delivers 100% renewable energy, and the tariff compares favourably: Club Bahnhof Ehrenfeld’s annual electricity bills have reduced by 400 euros. The green tariff also equates to a carbon saving of approximately 9,000 kg CO2.

Club Bahnhof Ehrenfeld has also implemented a temporary shutdown of refrigerators, which has saved 2,972 euros and 8,102 kgCO2 annually. Other actions related to cooling include optimization of temperature controls and regular cleaning and maintenance of fans, which have further increased savings.

The Club has converted many of its lighting units to LED, including stage lighting (PAR 64 Cans), which has saved 722 euros per year and 1,967 kgCO2. Since 2012, stage lighting has also been fixed using wired bars which connect, hang and allow the user to simultaneously switch all lights on and off, improving speed of setup and energy efficiency.

In total, the Club’s actions achieved a close to 50% reduction in electricity use from its 2010 baseline, which equates to approximately 4,992 euros and 21,519 kg CO2.

“With energy costs rising, energy efficiency is not just an economic imperative for us. As a young business we want to develop a long-term and sustainable perspective on our work and part of this is acknowledging and living up to our responsibility with regards to the environment.”
